Is dark mode better for our eyes?

Robert Dean

Dark mode is a theme or interface change that can be applied across different devices. Generally, the interface of most operating systems and applications are clear, although in some apps and systems in general, we have the possibility to change the tones. Following this we cannot avoid asking ourselves a simple question:It is the best dark mode for our eyes?

Nowadays there are many people who prefer to use the dark mode instead of the clan. The justification for this is that dark mode reduces the strain on your eyes. Is this really so? Has advantages and disadvantages? We will discuss this below.

Is dark mode better for our eyes?

The vast majority of people who use the dark mode claim that it is capable of helping to reduce eyestrain and it is just one of the reasons why it is gaining so much strength. Due to its popularity and the benefits that many users claim it has, different brands of devices were forced to add this mode. From Apple with the iPhone, to the internet giant, Google, added a dark theme to its browser. We can even force it on each web in Google Chrome.

Enable dark mode in Windows 11

In Windows 11 it is also possible to activate the dark mode in a matter of seconds. For this we will have to follow these steps:

We are going to go to the System Configuration by pressing Windows + i. After this we go to Personalization> Themes. Here we will be able to choose the dark mode.

Once we apply this, the entire interface of the operating system will change color.

The effects of light on the eyes

Dark mode is focused on reducing blue light emission on devices. This means that before discussing the effects of dark mode on human eyes, we need to understand what the effects of light on the eyes are.

Blue light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum that has a wavelength between 450 and 495 nanometers. All devices have one thing in common: they all emit blue light. Blue light mostly comes from the sun and is scattered around us.

Therefore, the color of the sky appears blue. Compared to other colors in the electromagnetic spectrum, blue light has more energy. This light, being the same as the sun or similar, makes our brain understand that it is daytime.

Additionally, blue light can have great benefits: it enhances alertness and also lifts your spirits.

However, something we will have to consider is that too much exposure to blue light can endanger our health. Much research claims that there is a connection between eye damage and shortwave blue light. This shortwave light is 415 to 455 nanometers in length.

The vast majority of electronic devices emit this light with wavelengths between 415 and 490 nanometers. So, this blue light helps us regulate the heart rate that would give rise to the natural cycle of sleep, looking at our devices late can have a totally opposite effect.

Several investigations claim that Blue Light stops or slows the release of the sleep hormone melatonin, which makes getting into a deep sleep at night too much of a hassle.

So dark mode on our devices helps reduce health risks by reducing blue light emission. Those people who use it say that using it at night allows them to have longer and deeper dreams, resting much better.

Although this was not verified. The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) recommends using dark mode to reduce glare and warm colors for restful sleep.
