Nicolai Muchgian, co-founder and programmer of the MakerDAO protocol, was found dead on a beach near Ashford Hospital in Condado, Puerto Rico. According to the local website El Nuevo Día, Muchgian would have drowned on the beach next to the hospital. Muchgian was only 29 years old, which makes the circumstances of the event very suspicious. In addition, the programmer died two days after writing a message in which he said that the CIA and Mossad were threatening him with death. With this, many people speculated if the programmer’s death was not a murder. On the other hand, most of the community paid condolences and tributes on the death of the coder. In addition to MakerDAO, Muchgian works on several cryptocurrency-related projects, including Ethereum, BitShares and Rai, a hard fork of MakerDAO’s stablecoin (DAI).
Community remembers MakerDAO creator
Three days before the discovery of his death – precisely on October 28 – Muchgian was worried that the CIA and Mossad were after him. Both are the intelligence services of the United States and Israel, respectively. The programmer could not say why, but he was sure of this pursuit. Furthermore, Muchgian believed his girlfriend was a spy who planted a laptop in his house. The purpose of the suit, according to Muchgian, was to incriminate him on criminal charges. “The CIA, Mossad and the pedo elite are running some sort of blackmailing sex trafficking ring from Puerto Rico and the Caribbean islands. They’re going to frame me with a laptop planted by my ex-boyfriend who was a spy. They will torture me to death,” said the programmer in his last tweet.
Last tweet written by Muchgian before his death. Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson wrote a tweet where he remembers meeting Nicolai Muchgian while working at BitShares. He says the programmer had a wide range of interests, including game theory, Urbit and blockchain technologies. “Nikolai was one of the people in the early days of Ethereum and smart contracts. He was able to predict the possibility of smart contract hacker attacks and invented the security-oriented approach to smart contract design. In addition, the cryptographic community shares its contributions to the blockchain and crypto industry,” said Hoskinson.
death by drowning
The newspaper El Nuevo Día claimed that Muchgian died while swimming on the beach behind Ashford Hospital. Apparently, the programmer was swimming in the sea when he was swept away by the sea currents and drowned. Rescue teams managed to rescue the body and attempted to resuscitate it with artificial respiration, but the programmer was already dead. Muchgian resided in San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico, which is a state associated with the US. After he left MakerDAO, Muchgian continued working on decentralized finance (DeFi) and making platforms more resistant to censorship. Puerto Rican authorities will continue to investigate the case.
