Portfolio created at BNB loses BRL 5.2 million in hacker attack

In the early hours of Tuesday (18), BitKeep, a wallet created at BNB, suffered a hacker attack and lost more than US$ 1 million. The value corresponds to approximately R$ 5.3 million based on the current quotation. Shortly after the attack, BitKeep confirmed the hack and theft of funds on twitter. According to the wallet, the attack took place on BNB Chain, but the team managed to contain the hacker’s action. In this way, BitKeep prevented the attacker from stealing more money. In addition, the wallet has guaranteed that it will return all money to users who suffered losses from the attack. For this, the team created a repayment plan that provides for the return of these funds.

For now, BitKeep has suspended services to ensure there are no more cryptocurrency security issues. The team then initiated communication and cooperation with other security agencies to track down the hackers responsible for the attack. The BitKeep team is working to track down the hacker to recover the stolen assets. As stated, BitKeep will refund all affected users the full amount. Shortly after the attack, the company released the full payment plan for the funds. This plan will have the following steps: BitKeep will launch a compensation portal within three business days, starting this Tuesday, for all victims to request reimbursement; according to the company, the commitment is to compensate 100% of the stolen assets; BitKeep has created a special Telegram group for all affected users (there will be two groups, one in Chinese and one in English), with information on the progress of the new plan. The group will also serve for users to ask questions and follow up on investigations. Finally, the wallet announced that it intends to find and contact the hacker. The idea is to make a proposal in which the attacker returns the stolen funds and receives a reward. But BitKeep also intends to offer incentives to anyone who can help identify the attackers. “We will encourage people so they can help identify hackers and recover stolen assets. Regarding hackers, we ask that you contact us. You will be highly rewarded. Thanks in advance,” the wallet said. BitKeep stated that it will keep its users updated with more details on the matter.

Wallet Hacks in DeFi Space

Decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol hacks have increased sharply since last year. Earlier this month, decentralized exchange (DEX) TransitSwap lost more than $21 million to a hacker who exploited an internal flaw in a contract. Likewise, a Solana-based DeFi protocol, Mango Market, lost over $100 million to hackers exploiting a connection between the BNB Beacon Chain (BEP2) and BNB Chain (BEP20 or BSC) networks. Hacks and attacks in the month of October reached the peak of 2022. According to the Chainalysis report: “October is now the biggest month of the biggest year ever for hacking activities. So far this month, $718 million has been stolen from DeFi protocols in 11 different attacks.”
