On Wednesday, October 26, the seventh edition of the XTB Investing Masterclass – the largest free online conference for investors will take place. The hybrid formula of this year’s event allows not only participation from anywhere in the world, but also direct interaction with the speakers. Among them there will be valued market practitioners such as Rafał Glinicki or Mieczysław Siudek, but also experts in such areas as finance, geopolitics and energy security. Although it is getting colder outside the window, the panic related to high prices of coal and gas seems to be fading away. On Tuesday, just before 10:00 am, natural gas in the Dutch TTF hub in November contracts is cheaper by almost 6.6% to less than EUR 93 per MWh. In December contracts, the price of natural gas drops by 4.67% and is only EUR 129.44 per MWh, compared to almost EUR 350 quoted at the end of August. Meanwhile, the price of steam coal in the November contracts listed on the ICE exchange fell on Tuesday to USD 267 per ton, while at the beginning of September historical price records were set – over USD 380 per ton. It therefore seems that Moscow’s energy blackmail has failed, and Europe has no reason to fear the coming winter any more. But are you sure?
– The largest increase in gas, but also in coal prices was visible primarily during negotiations and contracting supplies from sources other than Russia by countries that had to ensure adequate storage before winter. Buying at any price by Germany did not help keep prices at the lower levels. Blackmail has certainly worked because, rather than spending money on, for example, armaments or development, most European countries spend money on energy. This is killing Europe’s competitiveness against other regions of the world. However, as always in the economy, high prices result in rationalization or increased efficiency of consumption – argues Marcin Tuszkiewicz, one of the invited experts, who during the 7th edition of the XTB Investing Masterclass will conduct a debate on the future prices of raw materials and energy. One of the participants in this debate will be Piotr Woźniak, former Minister of Economy and long-term president of the management board of PGNiG.

– Permanent damage to the Nord Stream gas pipelines actually passed without any consequences for the quotations (except for the intraday) and this is important for us in Europe. It is important because the market discounts information on the undertaken adjustment actions announced or already taken by European companies, administrations and consumers. In this sense, Russia’s blackmail is burnt. In my opinion, the markets have come to terms with the restrictions, aware of a more or less fair distribution of various restrictions and burdens – mainly due to a good regulatory environment resulting from EU regulations – argues the expert.
