Vitalik Buterin to Release Book on Ethereum and Proof of Stake

September will be a busy month for fans of the Ethereum network. Firstly, the long-awaited The Merge update, scheduled for September 15th. Second, Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin will release his first book. Titled Proof of Stake: The making of Ethereum and the Philosophy of Blockchain”, the work is now available for pre-order on Amazon. The book launch is scheduled for September 27th, 12 days after the release of The Merge. The work brings together Buterin’s ideas and writings over the years on the creation of the blockchain network. It will also feature accounts of the creation of Ethereum, as well as Buterin’s thoughts on Web3. In addition, the programmer will also talk about democracy, economy and other topics.

The Vitalik Buterin Book: Proof of Participation

Proof of Stake… is a compilation of Buterin’s writings on the creation of Ethereum over the years. The work is the result of a collection of essays written by Buterin before and during the rise of Ethereum. In addition to Amazon, the book is also available on Gitcoin, a repository of works focused on cryptocurrencies. Those who purchase the work through Gitcoin will be able to obtain the physical book and an NFT copy, both signed by Buterin. However, the cost is salty: 0.1337 Ether (ETH), or BRL 1,075 at the current price. In return, Buterin stated that he intends to donate all the amount raised by sales on Gitcoin. In the case of Amazon, the work costs US$ 16.99 (physical book) and US$ 12.99 (Kindle digital format). The amounts correspond to R$ 86.13 and R$ 65.85, respectively. The writings would reveal that Buterin was “a vivid and imaginative writer,” described Gitcoin. Buterin, on the other hand, made the announcement about the book’s launch on Tuesday (30) on his account in the twitter. “’Proof of Stake’, the book (physical and digital) compiling various writings I’ve done over the last 10 years, will be out in a month! You can get a signed digital copy and NFT on Gitcoin. I will donate all my share of the proceeds to Gitcoin!” said Buterin.

An Internet-native world

According to the book’s description, Buterin’s works centered on building an internet-native world. The idea behind Ethereum, according to the work, was to create a complete ecosystem for the development of a cryptoeconomy. In this sense, the work states that the Ethereum developer was not focused on the token economy part, but on the fundamentals. “While many around him were focused on seeing the value of his tokens increase, he was working through the issues and possibilities of creating an Internet-native world,” the work said. However, many critics of Ethereum claim that the fact that most of the tokens are in the hands of the Ethereum Foundation contradicts this precept. Critics also point out the contradiction in the fact that both Buterin and the Foundation have sold large sums of ETH in the past. Finally, the book also addresses the concept of Proof of Stake (PoS), of which Vitalik was one of the main proponents. As reported by Criptofácil, the Ethereum network will receive the PoS consensus after the implementation of The Merge. The new mechanism replaces miners with validators, who leave a predetermined amount of 32 ETH to be eligible to validate blocks.
