What is Wi-Fi 7 and when will it be available?

Robert Dean

You may have started hearing about Wi-Fi 7, but the first thing you need to know is that the standard wifi 7 does not exist on the market yet. The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is still in a voting process to decide what functions the final version will have.

Qualcomm, MediaTek and TP-Link are the main manufacturers that are driving the development of Wi-Fi 7.

Still, many brands of routers in the market are already launching their devices that meet some of the features of Wi-Fi 7, which is nothing more than an optimized wireless network that will double the bandwidth and optimize multiple inputs and outputs.

Now, how is it possible that some companies know what are the main features of Wi-Fi 7? This is because the IEEE published a document that describes all the features of the new connectivity, allowing them to develop equipment even though no official standard has been published. Some of the most impressive qualities are as follows:

– 320 MHz bandwidth: it will have twice the capacity of the bandwidth of Wi-Fi 6, which reaches 160 MHz. The 320 MHz will double the performance that the network is capable of supporting. According to the IEEE, Wi-Fi 7 will be capable of a nominal data rate 4.8 times higher.

– 4K-QAM: this means that Wi-Fi 7 reaches 4096-QAM, while Wi-Fi 6 only reaches 1024-QAM. So the higher the QAM number, the faster the data transfer. It should be noted that the extension of the signal will be less.

– MU-MIMO improvements: refers to multiple-input, multiple-output, multi-user technology. Wi-Fi 7 will accept more connections at the same time, it will reach up to 16 transmissions.

– Support for multiple links: It will have Multi-Link so that the interference is less, in this way the speed of the connection of the router will not be affected. The objective of Multi-Link is to offer a very high data transfer rate with extremely low latency.

When will Wi-Fi 7 be available?

Many of the best mobiles on the market and smart televisions will incorporate compatibility with this new Wi-Fi in 2023. Although the reality is that several of these devices will adhere to Wi-Fi 6E standards. So the real question is when will you be able to buy a Wi-Fi 7 router.

TP-Link, one of the companies leading this project, announced that its new Wi-Fi 7 routers will go on sale on March 15, 2023. Asus also stated that it will soon join this new technology with a router capable of reaching 25 Gbps.

So some truly Wi-Fi 7-compatible equipment should arrive in 2023. Of course, since this is a very new connection, first-generation routers will be expensive. On the other hand, more affordable gadgets may not take full advantage of what this new standard will offer, so it’s best to wait.
